  • Clueless in East Meadow
    By Stitches - Wednesday Aug 9, 2017

The Tool in the Pool is back. Ryan “Blame it on Rio” Lochte successfully returned from his 10-month suspension by winning the 200-meter medley in record time Sunday at the U.S. Open in Long Island. Of greater importance though is that the gas station bathrooms in and around the East Meadow N.Y. area are still...

  • Shifting winds could bring cleaner air to SF and East Bay
By Annie Ma - Saturday Oct 14, 2017

An anticipated shift in winds could bring cleaner air to San Francisco and the East Bay, easing up a hazy week of unhealthy air brought on by the North Bay fires. Meteorologists at the Bay Area Air Quality Management District are seeing a change in wind patterns from north to northeast that could push the smoke away from San Francisco and off the coast. Kristine Roselius, a spokesperson for the district, said the shift would help the air quality continue to improve over the next few days. The East Bay in particular will benefit as the expected winds push the smoke plumes to the west of cities like Livermore and Concord.

  • Phones help crabbers retrieve gear before it kills whales
By ELLEN KNICKMEYER, Associated Press - Thursday Sep 14, 2017

HALF MOON BAY, Calif. (AP) — Fisherman Jake Bunch leans over the side of the fishing boat "Sadie K," spears his catch, and reels it aboard: an abandoned crab pot, dangling one limp lasagna noodle of kelp and dozens of feet of rope, just the kind of fishing gear that has been snaring an increasing number of whales off U.S. coasts.Confirmed counts of humpbacks, blue and other endangered or threatened species of whale entangled by the ropes, buoys and anchors of fishing gear hit a record 50 on the East Coast last year, and tied the record on the West Coast at 48, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
