The “man-child” entered pop culture roughly around the rise of “Star Wars” movies and video games circa 1980. Among the fanboys’ avatars then: Pee Wee Herman and Ferris Bueller. Radically different characters, for sure, but each created a safe space to protect their inner Peter Pan against a relentlessly annoying outside world filled with unwanted responsibility. They were helped along by two visionary directors — Tim Burton, who brilliantly adapted “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” from Paul Reubens’ TV series “Pee-wee’s Playhouse,” and John Hughes, who captured teenage angst like no other and found his perfect slacker revolutionary in Matthew Broderick for “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

It’s a minor miracle that Mimi Pond ever made it out of Oakland — or maybe that it took her so long to leave. The cartoonist and illustrator’s prolific career has included work in the National Lampoon, the New York Times and more, along with television credits with “Pee-wee’s Playhouse” and “Designing Women.” She even wrote the pilot episode of “The Simpsons.” But first, Pond was a starving artist in Oakland.

By Peter Hartlaub - Monday Aug 14, 2017
Mimi Pond is an incredible storyteller in any medium, most famously as a TV writer for “The Simpsons” as well as “Designing Women” and “Pee-Wee’s Playhouse.”[...] the greatest depths of melancholy, tragedy and humor are found in her quasi-memoir graphic novels, starting with “Over Easy” (2014) and now with “The Customer Is Always Wrong,” about an artist named Madge and a rogues’ gallery of restaurant customers wandering through Oakland in the 1970s.Pond is featured Thursday, Aug. 17, at the Starline Social Club, in a book event sponsored by Pegasus Books.

The wider world knows him as host of VH1’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” but RuPaul has been a New York legend since the 1980s. Back then, he was a fixture in the city’s gloriously grimy club scene, performing not only in drag shows, but with his new wave band Wee Wee Pole. Now 56, the man...
