    BERLIN (AP) — German automaker Volkswagen and Google have announced plans to cooperate in exploring possible uses in the auto industry for quantum computers.Quantum computing, a technology that's still in its early phases, uses the quirks of quantum physics to perform calculations at far higher speeds than current computers.Volkswagen said Tuesday that specialists from the two companies will work together using Google quantum computers, jointly developing algorithms and simulations.The automaker said it wants to use quantum computers for traffic flow optimization, exploring structures for new materials such as batteries for electric cars, and to develop artificial intelligence that could be used for self-driving vehicles.

  • 49ers S Jimmie Ward to start camp on PUP with hamstring injury

    Niners free safety Jimmie Ward was placed on the physically unable to perform list today after he sustained a strained hamstring during a conditioning test Thursday after the players reported to training camp. Ward is week-to-week, according to the team. He can be activated from the PUP at any time to start practicing. Players who begin the regular season on the PUP can’t play for the first six weeks of the season. Ward was moved from cornerback to safety in the offseason and his position is vital in the 49ers’ 4-3 defense. The 49ers’ backup safeties include Jaquiski Tartt, Vinnie Sunseri and undrafted rookies Lorenzo Jerome and Chanceller James.
