- Oak tree limb snaps, injures three at Menlo Park picnic
By Lizzie Johnson - Sunday Aug 6, 2017
Minutes before a massive limb snapped off a heritage oak tree on Menlo College’s campus Saturday, dozens of adults and children sat under its shade. The afternoon was bright and breezy, and tables filled with food and an inflated bounce house were set up on the college’s quad. Miraculously, fire department officials said, only two adults and a toddler sustained minor injuries. The other two — a woman who was struck in the head and a 1-year-old with abrasions — were taken by ambulance to Stanford Hospital with minor injuries. In a video filmed by first responders, the limb from the 100-year-old tree rests atop an empty stroller and a partially collapsed folding table. Drooping leaves from the limb sway in the breeze, and the entire area is circled with yellow caution tape. The oak tree weeps water from where the limb snapped from its trunk — evidence that this year’s heavy rain season, following years of drought, may have made the tree’s branches unstable.
