Michel Bettez Classical Recordings of bassoon music are thin on the ground, so I leaped on this new release by Canadian bassoonist Michel Bettez as soon as it crossed my desk — and was glad I did. Together with the excellent pianist Jeanne Amièle, Bettez offers a tour of the little-known world of 19th century bassoon works, with an emphasis on those with a lyrical and even lugubrious cast to them. Aside from Louis Spohr, the composers here are pretty obscure (three of the six pieces are billed as world premiere recordings) and their thinking tends to be fairly conventional.
