  • Cal baseball coach Mike Neu ready to lead Bears’ revival
By Ryan Gorcey - Wednesday Jul 19, 2017

In the summer of 1995, before his senior year of high school at Vintage-Napa, Mike Neu made the three-hour drive to Fresno State for an Area Code Games tryout. After throwing only 15 pitches at the morning practice, he learned he wouldn’t be asked to play in the game that evening. After overcoming long odds to reach the sport’s highest level, Neu isn’t fazed by the challenges he faces as Cal’s new head baseball coach. The program, which survived being cut just six years ago thanks to major fundraising efforts, is once again in danger of being eliminated with the campus facing more budget shortfalls. At Vintage, Neu set Empire League records for career wins (21) and strikeouts (196), but attracted little attention from major programs.Neu moved on to Miami, where he became the Division I leader in strikeouts per nine innings, and closed out the 1999 College World Series. After the Bears’ College World Series run in 2011 and a $10 million fundraising effort to save the program, then-head coach David Esquer hired Neu to help rebuild a program whose recruiting was decimated by the decision to cut baseball the year before.Neu was the chief architect of the 2015 Bears, who returned to the playoffs for the first time in four seasons, and set a program attendance record.Minnesota Twins reliever Trevor Hildenberger said that without Neu changing the pitcher into a side-armer as a redshirt junior, and the faith Neu showed by granting Hildenberger a full scholarship as a redshirt senior, he wouldn’t be playing Major League Baseball.
