- Rick Stevens, Tower of Power lead singer in band’s early years, dies at 77
By Aidin Vaziri - Tuesday Sep 5, 2017
Rick Stevens, who served as lead singer of Tower of Power in its early years, lending his vocals to the East Bay funk group’s signature 1972 hit, “You’re Still a Young Man,” died on Tuesday, Sept. 5. He was 77. Mr. Stevens was diagnosed with cancer three months ago, according to his son and manager Clarence Maloney. Mr. Stevens, who joined Tower of Power in 1969, replacing Rufus Miller, appeared on the band’s first two albums, 1970’s “East Bay Grease” and 1972’s “Bump City,” playing a significant role in developing the outfit’s powerhouse, horn-fueled R&B sound. He left the group after the second album was released, just as Tower of Power was on the cusp of a major breakthrough.

- Dear Abby: Expectant mother hasn’t told husband he’s not the father
By Jeanne Phillips - Wednesday Sep 6, 2017
Dear Abby: I am a mother of three and happily married to my kids’ father. I am now seven months pregnant with my fourth baby, but this child is not my husband’s. My husband is a loving man and a good father. My problem is, I don’t know how to tell him I’m not carrying his baby. The man I slept with is married and always saying he wants to marry me. He has one son with his wife. I love my kids, and I still love my husband. How can I tell him the truth without tearing my family apart? Big Mistake Dear Big Mistake: Not knowing your husband, I can’t guess at how he will react when you break the news.
- Dear Abby: New Marine’s mom wonders if she’s sending too many letters
By Jeanne Phillips - Monday Oct 16, 2017
Dear Abby: My son and I are very close. He joined the Marine Corps (a decision I fully support) and shipped out recently. I had read on a Marine family site that frequent letters from home are encouraged, so I had letters written even before I got his mailing address. I sent off three letters the day I got his address and another one three days later. They always start off with a supportive declaration (“I’m proud of you. You can do this.”) before moving on to what I hope are amusing anecdotes about what’s going on at home. I avoid topics that would make him homesick. I sign the letter with the initials of my son’s nickname for me.
