  • Dear Abby: Vigilant moms can’t shy away from asking about gun safety
By Jeanne Phillips - Monday Jul 31, 2017

Dear Abby: I am a Yale-trained pediatric nurse with a post-master’s as a psychiatric nurse practitioner. I respectfully ask that you retract your answer to “First-Time Mom in New Jersey” (June 21). I’m concerned your response will encourage other mothers to buy into the incorrect assumption that it’s “impolite” to ask questions that ensure their child’s safety. You should have encouraged and empowered “First-Time Mom” to politely ask about the presence of weapons in the other parents’ homes, and if so, how they are stored. It’s important information for her to have.

  • Tough question for hospitals: Who's too risky to release?
By JENNIFER PELTZ, Associated Press - Saturday Jul 8, 2017

NEW YORK (AP) — Four days before Alexander Bonds ambushed and killed a New York City police officer, he was in a hospital emergency room getting a psychiatric evaluation. There were antidepressant and anti-psychotic medications in his apartment, and his girlfriend told officers she took him to St. Barnabas for the psychiatric evaluation July 1, police said.If you're making a determination that someone's a danger to themselves or others, you better be pretty clear about it.Because you're taking away their liberties, said Grause, whose association represents hospitals and nursing homes."While psychiatrists can often identify circumstances associated with an increased likelihood of violent behavior, they cannot predict dangerousness with definitive accuracy," the American Psychiatric Association said in a 2012 position statement.Bonds, who had served prison time for a 2005 armed robbery, had railed about police and prison officers in a Facebook video last September.

  • Trump visits Vegas victims, denounces ‘very sick’ shooter
By Bob Fredericks - Wednesday Oct 4, 2017

President Trump on Wednesday flew to Las Vegas to visit some of the victims of the worst mass murder in modern US history and pay tribute to the first responders and hospital staff who came to their aid. “We met patients that were absolutely terribly wounded and the doctors, the nurses, all of the people...

  • Lawsuit challenges law that only doctors perform abortions
By PATRICK WHITTLE, Associated Press - Wednesday Sep 20, 2017

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The American Civil Liberties Union and Planned Parenthood filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday that challenges a Maine restriction common across most of the U.S. that abortions be performed solely by physicians. The two groups were joined by four nurses and abortion provider Maine Family Planning in challenging the law that prevents advanced practice registered nurses, such as nurse practitioners and nurse midwives, from performing the procedure.Julie Jenkins, a Belfast nurse practitioner and a plaintiff, said the state's rule is "medically unjustified" and especially punitive in Maine's rural areas, where access to doctors who provide abortions can be scarce.

  • ‘Lost Tapes: Son of Sam’ explores grim time in N.Y.
By David Bauder - Friday Jul 28, 2017

NEW YORK — Geraldo Rivera dates the low point in modern New York City history to Aug. 9, 1977. That was the day before police arrested David Berkowitz, the serial killer who called himself “Son of Sam.” He terrorized the city for a year with late-night shootings, killing six and wounding seven, and primarily targeted young women sitting in cars. The time is vividly brought to life in the Smithsonian Channel documentary, “The Lost Tapes: Son of Sam,” premiering Sunday at 9 p.m. The Investigation Discovery network is airing its own retrospective on the crime spree that airs next Saturday, Aug. 5.

  • Scrubs
    Wednesday Jan 13, 2010

Paging Scrubs. It's not a clinical work; it's a lifestyle magazine and terrific Web site geared to the 3 million RNs in the U.S. The new pub has all the hallmarks of a traditional women'smagazine with less cloying sentimentality and more heart. It pays tribute to a noble profession whose practitioners suffer from chronic overload and nationwide shortages. And it's a reminder thatnurses, like cops, are a subculture that face specific challenges.
