  • Middletown’s Valley Fire survivors reach out to Cardinal Newman football coach
By Mitch Stephens - Tuesday Oct 10, 2017

After the scorching flames of the Tubbs Fire destroyed portions of Cardinal Newman-Santa Rosa’s high school campus on Monday, the first people head football coach Paul Cronin heard from were from the Lake County city of Middletown. The callers were the parents of some former Cardinal Newman players. And they wanted to offer their support. These folks knew plenty about the tragedy of fire. In 2015, the “Valley Fire” destroyed much of Middletown, killed four people and claimed 2,000 structures. As of noon Tuesday, the North Bay fires that ravaged Sonoma, Napa and Mendocino Counties had taken a growing number of lives and left thousands either homeless, without power or ready to evacuate.

  • Sick puppies spur New York scrutiny of non-profit rescues
By MARY ESCH, Associated Press - Sunday Aug 27, 2017

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — When Alexis Kozmon and her husband decided to get a dog for their 6-year-old daughter, they chose to adopt rather than buy from a breeder to teach the child the value of rescuing.Four weeks later, the puppy the family named Sugar was dying painfully from distemper, and despite $3,000 in veterinary treatments, the only humane option was to put her down. Two of Sugar's siblings met the same fate. Kozmon faulted the volunteer-based rescue that had trucked the puppies from Texas, but when she complained to New York's consumer protection agency, she learned such groups are exempt from oversight."There was a loophole," said Kozmon, who lives in Middletown, Connecticut, but adopted from a group in southeastern New York.

  • Casinos offer shelter for those displaced by fires
By Michael Shapiro - Wednesday Oct 18, 2017

For the third time in just over two years, Middletown’s Twin Pine Casino is operating an evacuation center for those forced out of their homes by raging fires. Meanwhile, Rohnert Park’s Graton Casino opened its hotel to fire refugees in Sonoma County. Casinos are typically places to gamble, drink and dine, but during the Wine Country fires these two facilities have volunteered to serve some of the thousands of people forced to leave their homes during the fires that have recently consumed entire neighborhoods. The Sulphur Fire near Clear Lake, which has burned more than 2,200 acres and destroyed at least 158 homes, ignited during the nighttime hours of Sunday, Oct. 8.
