  • India airline Vistara treats women differently

    In a country where female travelers face myriad dangers, one Indian airline has an idea: chivalry, and no middle seats. With its Woman Flyer service, Vistara has begun offering to help women flying solo with their bags, escort them to and from their ground transportation, and give them preferred window and aisle seats on their flights — no middles. The New Delhi airline says 75 to 100 women use the complimentary service each day. It is believed to be the first airline to offer such a service. Sanjiv Kapoor, Vistara’s chief strategy and commercial officer, said the airline began offering it after noticing women seeking help after their planes had landed.

  • Publisher Tronc acquires Daily News, storied NY tabloid

    NEW YORK (AP) — Newspaper publisher Tronc has acquired the Daily News, a storied New York tabloid newspaper that won a Pulitzer Prize this year but has been buffeted by the changing media environment.Chicago-based Tronc Inc., the publisher of the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune, announced the deal Monday night, and the Daily News posted a story on its website.Tronc CEO Justin Dearborn said acquiring the paper and its popular website would "provide us with another strategic platform for growing our digital business, expanding our reach and broadening our services for advertisers and marketers," and both Tronc and Daily News executives said the company would maintain the quality of the paper's journalism.

    Health organizations and providers of assisted living services are scrambling to coordinate the relocation of hundreds of seniors from nursing homes, collect medical supplies and deploy volunteers who can recognize signs of dementia or Alzheimer’s among the thousands of North Bay residents who have made their way to shelters set up in response to the Wine Country fires. At least 20 senior living facilities have been fully or partially evacuated since the fires began Sunday, according to Bay Area representatives of the Alzheimer’s Association, which is tracking the relocations.
