  • Liverpool’s teen newcomer stands tall against Hoffenheim
By Associated Press - Tuesday Aug 15, 2017

In the absence of unsettled playmaker Philippe Coutinho, Liverpool turned to an 18-year-old right back making his European debut for some set-piece success in its Champions League playoff win against Hoffenheim on Tuesday.“Our little hero,” Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said of Alexander-Arnold, who has been at the English club since the age of 6, has played for England’s youth teams and is making his full breakthrough in the first team this season.Liverpool — a five-time European champion— is on course to reach the group stage after Havard Nordtveit inadvertently deflected substitute James Milner’s cross into his own net to make it 2-0 in the 74th minute. In other games Tuesday, CSKA Moscow beat Young Boys of Switzerland 1-0 on an own goal in added time, Azerbaijani club Qarabag FK moved closer to its first appearance in the group stage by beating FC Copenhagen 1-0, former Champions League quarterfinalist APOEL beat Slavia Prague 2-0, and Sporting Lisbon played Steaua Bucharest to a scoreless tie.The Rapids are 6-12-4 this season, their fourth under Mastroeni, who took over after a 16-year MLS playing career that included 13 seasons as a midfielder for Colorado. The United Bid Committee is considering 49 stadiums — including Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara — in those regions for inclusion in the official bid that will be sent to soccer’s international governing body, FIFA, in March.

  • Does ‘Runaways’ Connect With the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Sort Of
    By Carli Velocci, provided by
    - Thursday Jul 27, 2017

Executive producer Jeph Loeb told reporters at TCA on Thursday that the teenagers do exist in the same world as the Avengers, but there won’t be any in-series connections with them — at least for now.“Runaways,” which follows a group of teenagers who find out their parents are supervillains, is Marvel’s first original series on Hulu, but the studio has already produced multiple shows for ABC, Freeform and Netflix. The ABC and Netflix shows have their own continuity that tangentially connects with the movies, whether it’s through passing dialogue or major events that affect stories, but the relationships is largely one-way.“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” for example, was affected by the events in “Civil War” and “Winter Soldier,” but its plots don’t affect the movies. The Marvel Cinematic Universe, mostly, helps the whole franchise to jump into the superheroics and the fantasy without having to introduce the concept of superheroes to the audience, something the show’s two showrunners said is liberating.
