  • Terrorist label frustrates Muslim community in the woods
By MICHAEL HILL, Associated Press - Monday Oct 2, 2017

ISLAMBERG, N.Y. (AP) — If Islamberg truly is a hotbed of jihad, a heavily armed terrorist training ground hidden in the woods of upstate New York, it's hard to see along the rutted dirt road winding through the Muslim community. On a recent day, women in hijabs carried babies on their shoulders and two visiting state troopers passing through the front gate were greeted warmly. Teenage boys in brimless caps walked by modest homes, and stray chickens pecked at the grass. The scene is more country road than backwoods bunker. But this enclave just west of the Catskill Mountains is dogged by terror accusations, many spread on right-wing websites.

MONTICELLO, N.Y. (AP) — The 78-year-old woman's mind was clouded by dementia. But she recognized the brunette with a slight smile in the faded picture from the 1970s detectives showed her."Me," the woman uttered in a voice barely above a whisper. The picture helped investigators visiting an assisted-living facility near Boston last month verify they had finally found Flora Stevens. She had been a $2.25-an-hour chambermaid at the grandest hotel in upstate New York's Catskills when she was dropped off at a hospital one summer night in 1975 and vanished.
