  • New law bans California employers from asking applicants their prior salary
By Kathleen Pender - Friday Oct 13, 2017

California employers can no longer ask job applicants about their prior salary and — if applicants ask — must give them a pay range for the job they are seeking, under a new state law that takes effect Jan. 1. AB168, signed Thursday by Gov. Jerry Brown, applies to all public- and private-sector California employers of any size. The goal is to narrow the gender wage gap. If a woman is paid less than a man doing the same job and a new employer bases her pay on her prior salary, gender discrimination can be perpetuated, the bill’s backers say. Last year, the state passed a weaker law that said prior compensation, by itself, cannot justify any disparity in compensation.

  • Soccer match at Levi’s Stadium expected to cause traffic gridlock
By Filipa Ioannou - Wednesday Jul 26, 2017

Soccer match at Levi’s Stadium expected to cause traffic gridlockWith more than 55,000 soccer fans expected to descend on Levi’s Stadium on Wednesday for a marquee match starting at 6:30 p.m. between the United States and Jamaica, commuters are bracing for rough play on the roadways during the evening rush hour. The 2017 Gold Cup final in Santa Clara is expected to provide transportation headaches that will test newly developed agreements between the stadium and the transit agencies that serve the area.Traffic gridlock around the stadium is expected to begin as early as 1:30 p.m., when the parking lots open at the venue, and spike again when the event ends about 9:30 p.m., police predict.Because California’s Great America near the stadium will remain open Wednesday, law enforcement agencies will not be able to set up counterflow lanes, which interfere with access to the amusement park.
