  • What about young Anna Lee? She's backing Levon Helm memorial
By KELLY P. KISSEL, Associated Press - Wednesday Jul 26, 2017

(AP) — "Young" Anna Lee Amsden, immortalized in The Band's song "The Weight," is kicking off an effort to restore Levon Helm's childhood home and extend a musical heritage the drummer from Turkey Scratch, Arkansas, developed over 60 years. The Levon Helm Legacy Project says it needs about $150,000 to preserve the green-sided sharecropper's house, erect a bust of the performer nearby and introduce young people to the blues, folk and rock 'n' roll traditions.Helm died from throat cancer in 2012 at age 71 after spending his final years at Woodstock, New York — far from the cotton fields that surrounded his old home a few miles from the Mississippi River.Helm is noted for his work as a drummer and a singer for The Band, though he also played Loretta Lynn's father in "Coal Miner's Daughter" and Capt. Jack Ridley in "The Right Stuff."While Helm's childhood home has been moved twice from its original location, there's still interest in Turkey Scratch, said North Little Rock sculptor Kevin Kresse.

Of all the many platforming heroes we’d love to bring to VR, we have to admit Sonic the Hedgehog wasn’t one we’d previously considered. • Day of the Dead folk opera protests silencing
By Lily Janiak - Tuesday Oct 31, 2017

The day after the 35th annual Day of the Dead procession marches outside its doors on 24th Street, the Mission District’s Brava Theater continues the holiday festivities with “Imperial Silence: Una Ópera Muerta.” Written by John Jota Leaños and Sean Levon Nash and directed by Leaños, the multimedia show mixes animation with folk dance performed to Mariachi and Son jarocho. The piece’s four acts explore and seek to counteract the ways the U.S. silences dissidents and outsiders, drawing on forms from Mother Goose stories to a news broadcast for the dead.
