- Grizzly Peak fire in Oakland hills is 50 percent contained
By Sarah Ravani - Thursday Aug 3, 2017
A fire that broke out around Grizzly Peak in the East Bay hills was 50 percent contained Thursday morning as firefighters remained on scene, dousing hot spots throughout the challenging terrain, officials said. The blaze, dubbed the Grizzly Fire, scorched 20 acres of the Oakland Hills after erupting about 1 p.m. on Wednesday, but did not spread overnight, fire officials said Thursday morning. After battling several flare-ups that occurred overnight, crews planned to stay on scene for another 12 hours Thursday to ensure that the area known for its thickets of grass and trees didn’t reignite, said Charleton Lightfoot of the Oakland Fire Department. Grizzly Peak Boulevard will remain closed between South Park Drive and Centennial Boulevard for most of Thursday to give crews unfettered access to the fire scene, Lightfoot said.
