  • Ghosts dance at Bindlestiff for All Souls Day play
By Lily Janiak - Wednesday Oct 25, 2017

Some San Franciscans might think of Day of the Dead celebrations as a Hispanic phenomenon, but All Souls Day is also important in Filipino culture, with a rich tradition of graveside storytelling that honors the dead. “Mumu,” an immersive theatrical ritual by Susmaryosep & Co. with Bindlestiff Studio, seeks to tap into that heritage. (“Mumu,” which is pronounced “mu-moh,” means “ghost” in Tagalog.) Audiences move at their own pace about the space — Bindlestiff can accommodate just 40 at a time — interacting with characters from San Francisco in 1977. The largely nonverbal piece uses dance and some poetry to enter the world of a young Filipino immigrant, Bayani, played by Kyle Limin.
