- Rebagg loses a ‘g’ to rebrand luxury handbag marketplace
By Katie Roof - Thursday Nov 2, 2017
Who needs two g’s when you can get by with one? Luxury handbag marketplace Rebagg is now Rebag because the startup “really wanted to elevate our game,” said Charles Gorra, founder and CEO. “Dropping the ‘g’ is a big symbol.” He believes that the shorter Rebag is more representative of the “simplicity” of the brand. “We also like the… Read More
- Next-generation Chevy Equinox crossover now on sale
By G. Chambers Williams III, Autos Correspondent - Friday Jul 21, 2017
Chevrolet moves its popular Equinox compact crossover into its next generation for 2018, with a roomier interior, lots of new technology and - coming soon - its first diesel engine option. There is more chrome trim on all models, and Malibu-inspired styling, with such features as projector-beam headlights, LED daytime running lights, and horizontal taillights.Among new interior features are an optional denim-style seat fabric, and a "kneeling" rear seat in which the bottom cushions tilt forward when the split-folding seatback is lowered, providing a flat load floor for cargo.Coming later this year will be the optional 2.0-liter inline turbo four-cylinder with 252 horsepower (48 less than the previous 3.6-liter V-6, which is no longer offered) and 260 foot-pounds of torque; and the same 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder turbo-diesel that is also available in the Chevrolet Cruze compact, with 136 horsepower and 236 foot-pounds of torque. The optional switchable all-wheel-drive system disconnects from the rear axle when not needed, helping to conserve fuel by allowing the vehicle to operate only on front drive.Leather seats are part of the Premier extras, along with an eight-way power driver's seat with lumbar, front heated seats, dual-zone air conditioning with automatic climate control, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio and phone controls, wireless phone charging, a six-speaker audio system, a driver-information center with color screen above the steering column, and 18-inch aluminum wheels. The Premier also comes with a power tailgate with hands-free opening, as well as the LED headlights and taillights; remote vehicle start; keyless entry with pushbutton start; deep-tinted rear glass; and the split-folding rear seat.Safety gear includes radar- and camera-based adaptive technologies, which on our Premier model were such standard items as a rear-view camera, side blind-zone alert, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear park assist. The Comfort and Convenience Package II ($1,895) on our tester tacked on some of the optional technology, including the Safety Alert Seat (haptic seat), Surround Vision, Forward Collision Alert with Following Distance Indicator, Low-Speed Forward Automatic Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Rear Seat Reminder (when there's a child back there and you're departing the vehicle), Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.Equinox is set up to accommodate today's electronic devices, with the wireless charging feature in the front center console area that kept my Samsung Galaxy S8 all charged up.Standard safety features included electronic stability control with traction control, front seat-mounted side air bags, outboard roof-mounted side-curtain air bags for both rows of seats, the GM teen-driver system, a theft-deterrent system, four-wheel antilock disc brakes, and tire-pressure monitoring.
- Hot Property: Live/work loft in Berkeley boasts fine finishes, grand views
By Jordan Guinn - Friday Nov 17, 2017
A live/work condo with Venetian-plaster walls, Machiche wood floors and plenty of architectural pedigree has arrived on the market in Berkeley. “The finishes are superior, and the views are optimum,” said Bill Grimason of Marvin Gardens Real Estate, who is listing the two-bedroom for $1.445 million. “I’ve sold a lot of live/work units, and this is the most impressive one I’ve done.” For years the home served as the headquarters of Sheahan + Quandt Architecture & Interiors. The team designed the interior of the home, and Patrick Sheehan also designed the exterior.
- What Designing For The Homeless Can Teach Us About Designing For Anyone
By jonah sachs - Friday Sep 8, 2017
Detroit’s Humble Design, which remakes the living spaces of the recently homeless, shows the huge benefits of embracing people’s basic humanity when designing solutions to their problems.
It’s a frigid December Friday in Detroit. The sun has set long ago as Lamanda Brown returns from work, stamping through the dark along ice-covered sidewalks. As she opens the door to her home, she’s overwhelmed by warmth that wasn’t there when she left: rooms full of light, freshly painted walls, and a bear hug from her interior designer. Brown’s house has been transformed over the last 12 hours from empty rooms and uncovered floors to a meticulously furnished home.
- Modern twist on classic Victorian
By Jordan Guinn - Friday Sep 8, 2017
Behind the facade of a Queen Anne Victorian rests a wholly updated residence with a flowing layout and high-tech amenities. “It’s exquisite curb appeal that opens to a magnificent floor plan,” said Dino Zuzic of Compass Real Estate, who is listing 1161 York St. for $3.395 million. Planter boxes and a brilliant white facade adorn the Mission District Victorian. Black steel frame windows complement the classical construction that features dentils, fish scale shingles, peaked gables and a covered portico. Inside, the expansive interior boasts an Ortal gas fireplace, Sonos-ready hi-fi wireless surround sound and a Ring security system. “It’s an urban dweller’s dream,” Zuzic said.
