  • Syracuse stuns No. 2 Clemson 27-24
By John Kekis - Saturday Oct 14, 2017

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — As the celebration in the Syracuse locker room reverberated through the walls of the Carrier Dome, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney winced a little bit, dreams of a perfect season lost in a sea of orange. Eric Dungey threw for 278 yards and three touchdowns, Cole Murphy kicked a tie-breaking field goal in the fourth quarter, and Syracuse stunned No. 2 Clemson 27-24 on Friday night to put a damper on the Tigers’ hopes of repeating as national champions. Down maybe, but not completely out. The Tigers (6-1, 4-1 ACC) won the national championship last season despite a loss during the season to Pittsburgh. “Every goal is there for this team,” Swinney said.

  • Basketball Hall of Famer John Kundla dies at 101
By Chronicle news services - Sunday Jul 23, 2017

Mr. Kundla, the Hall of Fame coach who led the Minneapolis Lakers to five NBA championships, died Sunday. With George Mikan in the middle and Mr. Kundla the calm, steady hand directing the team, the Lakers won the 1949 championship in the BAA — the league that preceded the NBA and NBA titles in 1950 and 1952-54, cementing the franchise’s place as the league’s first true dynasty. The Lakers also won an NBL title in 1948, but the NBL marks are not included in the NBA’s records.A year later, he was named one of the league’s 10 greatest coaches as part of the league’s “NBA at 50” celebration. In Mikan, Vern Mikkelsen and Stanford alum Jim Pollard, the Lakers assembled the first super team, beating New York in 1952 and ’53 and Syracuse in ’54 for the three straight titles.Isner became the second player to win an ATP title without facing a break point since records began in 1991.A tearful Kiki Bertens used an emotional change of ends in the deciding set of the Gstaad (Switzerland) Ladies Championship final to beat Anett Kontaveit 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.Lord’s, the London ground often referred to as the “Home of Cricket,” drew a full house — 26,500 — for the title game, about six times the previous high mark for a women’s match at Lord’s.For the first time since the Women’s World Cup began in 1973, the players received daily expenses equal to those provided for men in International Cricket Council events, and the visiting teams flew to England for the tournament in business class, as has long been the norm for men.Prize money increased to $2 million, 10 times the figure for the previous tournament, which was held in India in 2013.
