New York's hometown paper is once again owned by a Chicago-based newspaper holding company, following the 'New York Daily News' sale on Monday to Tronc Inc. In a way, it's like deja vu. Tronc wasformerly Tribune Publishing, the publisher of the 'Chicago Tribune,' which originally created the 'New York Daily News' nearly a century ago.

A 26-year-old San Jose man was fatally shot Friday evening near the Mayfair North neighborhood of San Jose, just north of Interstate 680. Police officers responded to a call at 6:25 p.m. to the 100 block of S. Jackson Avenue. They found the victim, later identified as Jesus Ayala-Melchor, suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Ayala-Melchor was taken to a hospital where he died overnight, according to the Santa Clara County coroner’s office. No suspects have been identified or apprehended. - Man dies Saturday morning in San Jose freeway crash

A man died Saturday morning when his Honda veered off of Highway 680 in San Jose, crashing into a light pole and a tree. The driver was heading north toward Jackson Avenue at around 10:28 a.m. when his vehicle went off the road, according to the California Highway Patrol. Officers and emergency personnel arrived at the scene minutes later and transported the man to a local hospital, where he died of his injuries. The cause of the accident is under investigation and the man’s name has not been released. No other vehicles were involved. Rachel Swan is a San Francisco Chronicle staff writer.
