In the film set during the Occupation during World War II, matinee heartthrob Jean-Paul Belmondo is a country priest who finds himself drawn to a cynical young widow (Emmanuelle Riva), who has abandoned religion for Communism.Melville was part of the French Resistance during the war, so he knew the Occupation inside and outside. The screening Sunday, July 16, at the Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive is a good opportunity to pay tribute to Riva.Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive, 2155 Center St., Berkeley.
- 49ers, yards away from first victory, can’t catch a break
By Ann Killion - Sunday Oct 15, 2017
LANDOVER, Md. — The 49ers were going to break their streak. They were going to win a game. All they needed to do was get into position for a Robbie Gould field goal. But then, disaster. On 2nd-and-10 from the Washington 40-yard line, C.J. Beathard was trying to find Pierre Garcon on a short route. The pass fell incomplete and a flag flew. “I thought 100 percent it was defensive pass interference,” Beathard said. “It looked like it wasn’t a question, and then we’d be in really good field-goal range. We needed 4 more yards and that would have given us more than enough for Robbie.” Instead, it was bad news for the 49ers: an offensive pass-interference call on Garcon.
- Kicker Robbie Gould scores all of the 49ers’ points at Arizona
By Scott Ostler - Monday Oct 2, 2017
GLENDALE, Ariz. — Having Robbie Gould be the most dangerous and productive member of the offense was never Plan A, but the 49ers gladly will take what he’s giving them as they wait for the offense to click. Gould scored all 15 of the 49ers’ points Sunday on field goals of 49, 39, 47, 48 and 23 yards. The 35-year-old is kicking better than ever in this, his 13th NFL season. His overtime field goal, which gave the 49ers a 15-12 lead, was Gould’s 28th consecutive make. He made his final seven kicks with the Bears in 2015, made all 10 with the Giants last season, and is 11-for-11 with the 49ers. Gould’s previous longest no-miss streak was 26, back in ’05 and ’06. Not that he’s counting.
