That made him a naturally beloved and popular figure, and is why his sudden death at age 40 on Friday is still so hard for people around Marin County and the Bay Area high school basketball community to swallow. Pitti, for 11 seasons the head boys basketball coach at San Marin-Novato, died surrounded by family and friends after being diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer just three weeks earlier.
