Return to Middle Earth again Amazon plans a series based on “The Lord of the Rings” by J.R.R. Tolkien. The show, available through its Prime service, will explore story lines that take place before the time of “The Fellowship of the Rings.” It will be produced by Amazon Studios in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line Cinema. The multi-season deal includes a potential spin-off series as well, said Amazon, which paid a reported $250 million for the rights. The big-screen version of the trilogy earned nearly $6 billion worldwide, and the final entry, “Return of the King,” won the 2003 best picture Oscar. No cast or release date has been announced.
