- Even Amazon Didn’t Think You’d Waste So Much Money On Prime Day
By Emily Price - Wednesday Jul 12, 2017
Amazon’s Prime Day started as a way to mark its birthday, but after initial success, a dedicated planning team turned the annual event into its best sales day—ever.
There really is a Christmas in July—for Amazon, at least. Tuesday’s Prime Day bonanza was the global sales monolith’s “biggest day ever,” beating out last year’s event and reinforcing it as a de facto new shopping holiday. The company said sales soared 60% over 2016’s event, and even beat out Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Limited to its Prime members, Amazon sold 2 million toys, 1 million pairs of shoes, and 90,000 televisions. This year’s top sellers included the Echo Dot, Instant Pot pressure cooker, and a 23andMe DNA test.

- The real point of Amazon Prime Day
By Pete Pachal - Friday Jul 7, 2017
It's right there in the title.
Amazon Prime Day, which is Tuesday, July 11 (though it technically starts on July 10), boasts some of the best deals you'll be able to get on tech, appliances, beauty products, and all the other junk we buy online. But the point of Amazon's fake holiday (which first arrived in 2015) is to get as many people to sign up for Prime, the company's loyalty program that costs $99 a year.
Of course, you could just sign up for a single month of Prime (for $10.99) to get the deals on Prime Day and then get out, but then you'd miss out. This year Amazon is putting extra emphasis on its other services, with deals on Music Unlimited, Kindle Unlimited, and more. It's even getting its growing armada of Echo products in on the deal, with more voice deals — deals you can only get by asking Amazon's digital assistant, Alexa, about them.
