  • ‘Will’ power: a lusty, rip-roaring Bard for modern times
By David Wiegand - Thursday Jul 6, 2017

“Will,” premiering on TNT with a pair of swashbuckling episodes on Monday, July 10, was created by Craig Pierce, who co-authored the screenplay for Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 “Romeo + Juliet” with Leonardo DiCaprio. Will falls in with a ragtag theater company headed by James Burbage (Colm Meaney) who is desperate enough to give the young upstart a shot at writing a play in order to compete with the success of the most famous scribe of the time, Christopher Marlowe (Jamie Campbell Bower). For one thing, in spite of having a wife and children back in Stratford, Will finds himself increasingly attracted to Alice Burbage (Olivia DeJonge), James’ winsome daughter. Will considers himself a good Catholic, but his focus is on his career until his cousin Robert Southwell (Max Bennett), a radical Catholic bent on revolution, enlists him in the cause and asks him to gussy up a written plea to Queen Elizabeth I to officially acknowledge “the one true religion,” which, of course, her father rejected because it interfered with his marriage plans.“Will” is filled with sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll — there’s a good amount of nudity, a lot of action and violence, and Will gets dragged to a party by Marlowe where he inhales with the likes of Sir Francis Bacon and Elizabeth’s astrologer, John Dee.The dialogue ripples with sly and subtle references to plays and immortal lines our young country bumpkin will create in future years.Meaney, always a great character actor, is superb as James Burbage, grudgingly accepting that the upstart from Stratford may have a modicum of talent, and Mattias Inwood shines as his son, Richard, who would probably rather be a 16th century matinee idol than a great actor.David Wiegand is an assistant managing editor and the TV critic of The San Francisco Chronicle.

  • After dismal 2016, shale gas drillers begin to turn a corner
By MICHAEL RUBINKAM, Associated Press - Tuesday Jul 4, 2017

While the pace remains much slower than it was during the industry's boom years earlier this decade, when a drilling frenzy transformed sleepy towns and rural areas into economic hotbeds, 2017 has produced a modest rebound and hope of better days ahead in the Marcellus Shale, the nation's largest natural gas field.Drillers had been battered by several years of rock-bottom prices caused by oversupply and inadequate pipeline capacity. The low prices were good for consumers, and businesses and manufacturers that use gas, but they cost energy companies billions and prompted some of them to stop drilling altogether."Markedly better prices, thus more cash flow and more capability to invest," said Jack Bergeron, Southwestern's senior vice president of operations.EQT, Pennsylvania's busiest driller, recently positioned itself to become the nation's largest natural gas producer by announcing plans to acquire Rice Energy Inc. of Canonsburg, the state's No. 3 producer, for $6.7 billion.
