The Balboa Theatre in San Francisco blends classic sci-fi movies, documentaries and UFO-centric guest speakers Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Space Visitors Film Fest. Well-known films including “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” and “Plan 9 From Outer Space” will anchor the all-day festival, scheduled to start at 10 a.m. and end some time after midnight. The festival also will feature the 2017 documentaries “The Mothman of Point Pleasant” and “Invasion of Chestnut Ridge,” as well as the documentary “Love & Saucers,” with director Brad Abrahams slated to attend. Guest speakers include Ruben Uriarte, the Mutual UFO Network state director for Northern California.

American hero and competitive eater Joey Chestnut just won Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest for the 10th time by scarfing down 72 (!) hot dogs.
The annual event, held on Coney Island, N.Y., requires participants to eat as many hot dogs as possible in a 10-minute period.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Former U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge was in critical condition Thursday after undergoing an emergency heart procedure at a hospital in Austin.A Ridge spokesman said the 72-year-old Ridge, Pennsylvania's Republican governor from 1995 to 2001, was attending the Republican Governors Association conference when he called for help at his hotel at about 7 a.m.The spokesman, Steve Aaron, said Ridge underwent a cardiac catheterization at Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas. He said Ridge has been responsive with physicians.Ridge was the nation's first homeland security secretary, serving under President George W. Bush until February 2005.
