  • Bicyclist killed in collision with VTA light rail train

    A bicycle rider was struck and killed by a light rail train in San Jose Saturday afternoon, a Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority spokeswoman said. The accident at Race Street and Parkmoor Avenue happened about 4:30 p.m., VTA spokeswoman Brandi Childress said. No other details were immediately available, Childress said. No one aboard the train was reported injured. The accident disrupted train service on the VTA’s Winchester-Mountain View line, with buses carrying passengers between the San Fernando and Fruitdale stations.   • Cyclist killed in San Jose Saturday identified

    A cyclist who died after being hit by a light rail train in San Jose on Saturday has been identified as Paul Candelaria. Candelaria, 26, was riding his bike through the intersection of Race Street and Parkmoor Avenue at 4:30 p.m. when a train on the Winchester-Mountain View line struck him. No one on the train reported any injuries from the collision. The accident halted service on the line for several hours.     LONDON — Two hundred years after Jane Austen died, a 10-pound note featuring an image of one of England’s most revered authors has been unveiled — right where she was buried.At the unveiling of the new “tenner” at Winchester Cathedral in southern England this week, Bank of England Governor Mark Carney said the new note celebrates the “universal appeal” of Austen’s work.Austen, whose novels include “Pride and Prejudice,” “Emma” and “Sense and Sensibility,” is considered one of the most perceptive chroniclers of English country life and mores in the Georgian era, combining wit, romance and social commentary.“Our banknotes serve as repositories of the country’s collective memory, promoting awareness of the United Kingdom’s glorious history and highlighting the contributions of its greatest citizens,” Carney said.
