Cam Newton didn’t have a great day against the 49ers. (AP Photo/Ben Margot) Pursuing the statistics, one would say that 49ers’ running back Carlos Hyde had a good afternoon in the one-sided loss to Carolina. He rushed for 45 yards on nine carries and caught six passes for another 32 yards. However, Hyde, by my accounting, only broke two tackles and only evaded two defenders. By contrast, wide receiver Pierre Garcon broke two tackles in six encounters with the ball in his hands. Also, Hyde’s usually good vision was absent. It followed an overtime loss to the Colts in which undrafted rookie running back Matt Breida had more snaps than Hyde and was more effective.
