  • Detroit luring manufacturers to industrial park, vacant land
By COREY WILLIAMS, Associated Press - Sunday Aug 13, 2017

DETROIT (AP) — Inside a fenced construction site on Detroit's east side, heavy machines are digging, shoving and hauling away tons of dirt in preparations for the latest addition to the city's industrial landscape.Auto parts supplier Flex-N-Gate is expected to bring 750 jobs to Detroit when it completes its 350,000-square-foot (32,500-square-meter) plant at the Interstate 94 Industrial Park.Quasi-governmental groups such as land banks are empowered by cities to find, acquire and clean up the land to compete with suburban communities that have open expanses of cleaner soil.Since most of the vacant land isn't connected, those groups buy up adjacent lots here and there to make usable larger pieces.Milwaukee has seen success along the Menomonee River, an area that once housed shops that made train cars, all kinds of machinery, bricks from clay, and processed grains and meat.Working with Milwaukee's private sector, about 300 acres of brownfields have been redeveloped into manufacturing land, trails, parks and wildlife habitat.

  • New Drone Video Shows Continued Landscaping and Construction at Apple Park
By Juli Clover - Thursday Aug 24, 2017

Apple is putting the finishing touches on its Apple Park campus in Cupertino, California, and a new video shared today by drone pilot Duncan Sinfield shows the company's recent progress on landscaping and other final construction projects.

Greenery is being added to the interior and exterior of the ring-shaped main building at a rapid pace, filling in an area that was once just mounds of dirt. Apple is using native plants and trees, and is said to be planting thousands of trees in Apple Park, including many fruit trees.

Much of the interior of the building is outfitted with furniture, and work is largely completed on the solar panels on the roof and the window shades that will protect the building from bright sunlight to moderate the inside temperature.

The Steve Jobs Theater, where Apple will host events, appears to be nearly complete, but there's still construction equipment in the area, so it's not quite clear if it will be ready in time for Apple's September iPhone event.

Along with the main drone video showing off Apple's progress, Sinfield has also published a 360-degree video. The video doesn't work in Apple's Safari browser, but if you use Chrome you can rotate the video to get a full view of the campus. On an iPhone, the YouTube app can be used with tilt gestures for a more complete picture of Apple Park.

Apple employees started moving in to Apple Park earlier this year, but it will take until the end of the year for the campus to be complete and for all of the employees to transition to the location.

Apple Park will be the home of approximately 12,000 Apple employees. Other Apple employees will work at the company's Infinite Loop campus and at other office locations in Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, Cupertino, San Jose, and San Francisco.

  • Free day brings out the sailor in visitors to SF’s Hyde St. Pier
By Steve Rubenstein - Friday Aug 25, 2017

It was a great day to look at old ships in San Francisco, especially because you didn’t have to pay $10 to do it. On Friday, walking on the vintage vessels at the Hyde Street Pier cost absolutely nothing. The National Park Service, in honor of its birthday, waived all entrance fees at the 124 parks that ask visitors to pony up. Hardly anyone knew the Park Service was having its 101st birthday, which made the $10 bonanza a nice thing. It was also free to visit places like Muir Woods, Yosemite and Yellowstone, but none of those places comes with a tall ship like the C.A. Thayer, which a lot of people were climbing on and grabbing the ropes of.
