- Piller edges hometown favorite Harkins to win Web.com event
By Ron Kroichick - Monday Aug 7, 2017
Piller edges hometown favorite Harkins to win Web.com event Martin Piller, born and raised in Dallas, held no illusions about where he stood among the few hundred spectators traipsing along for Sunday’s final round of the Web.com Tour event in Hayward. [...] on the 72nd hole, he missed a 12-foot birdie putt - by inches - and Piller made a clutch, 10-foot par attempt to win the Steph Curry Invitational (also known as the Ellie Mae Classic). Piller’s putt gave him a final-round 64 and kept him at 18-under-par for the tournament. Harkins, 31, played Orinda Country Club as a kid and recalled high school matches at Boundary Oak in Walnut Creek. Harkins gave himself a great chance, splitting the fairway with his tee shot and then plopping his approach shot about 12 feet from the hole. [...] after watching Harkins barely miss his birdie try, Piller knocked home his putt for the win. Piller, 31, has spent two full seasons on the PGA Tour, including last year. [...] he missed the cut in his final eight starts of the season, which is why he’s back on the Web.com. Stanford alum Andrew Yun, the third-round leader, posted even-par 70 and tied for third.
