  • Sonny Gray takes loss in possible last start for A’s
By Susan Slusser - Wednesday Jul 26, 2017

Gray went six innings and allowed four runs — all of them unearned, thanks to his flubbed throw to second— in Oakland’s 4-1 loss to the Blue Jays, unable to get his manager, Bob Melvin, to the 1,000-win mark after he reached 999 on Sunday. The A’s have dropped six of their past eight games, and they appear on the verge of dealing their longtime starter, the subject of rumors for the past month. Gray, a 2015 All-Star who is in his fifth season with Oakland, is a coveted asset before the Monday trade deadline. On Tuesday at Rogers Center, seven teams had scouts on had to watch Gray: the Yankees, who are making a strong push for the right-hander, along with the Cubs, Dodgers, Brewers, Pirates, Indians and Royals. Gray’s rocky inning Tuesday was the second, and, with no outs and a man on, he fueled it with his poor throw to second base on a possible double-play ball, making a lollipop of a throw into center while off balance. I wish I would have just tagged first base and tried to minimize the inning there but it was one of those quick decisions and if I execute it, it’s a great play. The next inning, Matt Chapman, playing shortstop on the shift, turned in a nifty spinning play at second to turn what initially was called a double play — but the Blue Jays challenged the out call on Josh Donaldson at second, contending Chapman wasn’t on the bag. Another wild pitch by Gray put Donaldson at third, but Gray struck out Morales and got Tulowitzki to ground out to end the inning. Matt Joyce led off the inning with a double and with two outs, Khris Davis also doubled, sending in Joyce.

  • Gray, Lowrie lift A’s to victory over White Sox
By Ron Kroichick - Wednesday Jul 5, 2017

Even when Oakland stitches together an impressive, wire-to-wire outing — strong pitching, plentiful hitting, spotless defense — the specter of trade talk lingers in the background, heavy and foreboding.Gray smothered the White Sox over six innings and Lowrie rapped out three singles and collected two RBIs.Cabrera actually was doubled off second base, when Gray threw a good pitch to Avisail Garcia — on his hands — and induced a soft, broken-bat liner to Lowrie near second base. The A’s may have disrupted Gray’s rhythm by scoring three runs in a long, laborious bottom of the fourth, which included a White Sox pitching change.Gray returned to the mound and promptly issued his first walk, followed by a booming home run from Chicago’s Matt Davidson. The A’s scored once in the first inning, twice more in the third — on Bruce Maxwell’s double to left-center — and then broke the game open a bit in the fourth.Davis finished with four stolen bases in all, matching his career-high.Liam Hendriks struck out the side in the seventh, Ryan Madson retired all three batters he faced in the eighth and Sean Doolittle handled the ninth, despite allowing Todd Frazier’s two-run homer.

  • Trade target Sonny Gray superb in A’s win over Indians
By Susan Slusser - Saturday Jul 15, 2017

With scouts from the Astros, Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers and Blue Jays among those on hand at the Coliseum, Sonny Gray put together another strong start and in doing so probably hastened his departure from Oakland.Gray, the top starting pitcher currently believed to be available on the trade market, worked six innings and didn’t allow a runner past second base as the A’s opened the second half with a 5-0 win over the defending American League champions on Friday night.Davis, who got a start because Jaycob Brugman was out with the stomach flu, had a big night against his former team, with two hits, including a homer, and two runs, and Yonder Alonso, fresh from the All-Star Game, contributed with his 21st homer, a solo shot in the fifth. The A’s public relations department went so far as to announce that he had not been scratched from his start, as was erroneously reported by a radio announcer in Chicago on Friday evening.Over his past four starts and 21 innings, Gray has allowed 11 hits, five walks and four earned runs and has 21 strikeouts.“It’s always different coming back from the All-Star break, you have a lot of days off — eight or nine days — and sometimes you feel a little rusty,” Gray said.Sean Doolittle, coveted by many teams because he’s left-handed and signed through 2020, worked a 1-2-3 eighth with two strikeouts.Oakland’s first hit off Carlos Carrasco came in the third, when Davis led off with an infield single.Rookie Matt Chapman put the “run” into Oakland’s final run, smacking a leadoff triple in the seventh and racing in to score when a wild pitch by Nick Goody bounced just a few feet away from Gomes.
