  • Snazzy Toyota Camry ups ante in power, mpg and handling
By Jeff Yip, Autos Correspondent - Monday Jun 26, 2017

Powered by a reputation for being family- and budget-friendly and, perhaps above all, its appliance-like reliability, Toyota's midsize sedan has been America's top-selling car for the last 15 years; 388,618 were sold last year in the U.S.[...] unless sprayed pearl day-glo green, the five-passenger four-door has never been much of a head turner or a winding roads burner. The new-generation Camry is the first vehicle out the shoot to fully utilize Toyota's new global architecture and the Lexus influence on the Camry's aggressive front fascia and grille is about as nuanced as a freight train. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder is new, with a high 13.0:1 compression ratio, longer stroke and smaller bore, and Toyota's D-4S fuel delivery, which supplements direct injection with port-fuel injection. The freer-flowing system not only has a more aggressive tone when the gas pedal's mashed, it frees up an additional three ponies and a couple more pound-feet of torque.Toyota estimates that nearly nine out of every ten 2018 Camry buyers will opt for the four-cylinder and new eight-speed automatic transmission.Like all Camry gas burners, the six runs on regular gas and its 2018 EPA ratings come in at 22 mpg city and 33 highway, up 4.8 and 10 percent, respectively, over the 2017 V6 Camry. The $27,800 LE, with a new lithium-ion 70-cell battery pack and narrow 16-inch tires carried over from 2017, scores 51 mpg city and 53 highway, nearly as frugal with fuel as Toyota's $24,685 2017 Prius. The tires' higher rolling resistance effect on fuel efficiency is perhaps partially offset by the roughly 24 pounds eliminated by going with a 13-gallon fuel tank, four gallons less than the 2017 hybrid. The suite includes pre-collision with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams and dynamic radar cruise control.Birds' eye view camera, blind-spot monitoring and rear–cross traffic alert with automatic braking are also available or standard.Other new offerings include an eight-way power front passenger seat with lumbar support, a panoramic moonroof, a black metallic roof, Qi-compatible wireless charging, Entune 3.0 audio plus with navigation, 8-inch touch screen, Google voice controls, and a 10-inch heads-up display.
