- National Park Service veteran named to head Golden Gate National Recreation Area
By Kurtis Alexander - Thursday Oct 26, 2017
Laura Joss, a 27-year veteran of the National Park Service who has led the agency’s West Coast office for the past year and a half, was appointed to the top post at the Golden Gate National Recreation Area on Thursday. As GGNRA superintendent, the Marin County resident will head the park service’s most visited site, a collection of federally managed historic and scenic properties around the Bay Area, including the Marin Headlands, Alcatraz, Ocean Beach, Fort Funston and the Presidio. More than 15 million people visited the area in 2016. “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to work in an iconic park like Golden Gate,” said Joss, 56.
- National Park Service kills new rules for dog access in GGNRA
By Lizzie Johnson - Thursday Oct 19, 2017
The National Park Service pulled the plug Thursday on a 14-year-long planning process for restricting dog access in the 80,000-acre Golden Gate National Recreation Area, 10 months after revelations emerged that agency officials had improperly corresponded about the process from their personal email accounts. The park service abandoned efforts to draw up new rules for where dogs can be walked off-leash and said it would stick with regulations that have been in effect since 1979. “We can do better and in the interest of upholding the highest standard of transparency and trust with our Bay Area neighbors,” acting park service Director Michael Reynolds said in a statement.
