By Eric Branch - Friday Aug 25, 2017
The 49ers, a team in the beginning stages of a major rebuilding project, on Friday released linebacker Ahmad Brooks, 33, an 11-year veteran who was their longest-tenured defensive player. Brooks ranks third in franchise history in sacks (51.5), is tied for second in postseason sacks (6.5) and was one of two players on the roster with more than 20 career sacks. However, he was also the third-oldest player on the roster — behind kicker Robbie Gould (35) and linebacker Elvis Dumervil (also 33, but two months older than Brooks) — and was in the final year of a contract that included a $4.45 million base salary this season.
