Teenage boys in brimless caps walked by modest homes, and stray chickens pecked at the grass. The scene is more country road than backwoods bunker.But this enclave just west of the Catskill Mountains is dogged by terror accusations, many spread on right-wing websites.

  • Smoke from Detwiler fire creates hazy views of Yosemite sights

    The massive wildfire burning west of Yosemite was causing intermittent power outages at the park and obscuring views on Wednesday, but all sights and services remained opened. Park spokesman Scott Gediman said many restaurants and hotels in Yosemite Valley were operating on electrical generators after seeing the lights flicker, mostly Tuesday night, as power lines either burned or were shut off for the fire fight. Authorities recommend that visitors check road conditions before traveling in the area. The Detwiler Fire remains about 30 miles outside the park’s western boundary and nearly 50 miles from the Yosemite Valley.

    STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (AP) — A judge was shot and wounded Monday morning as he walked toward his county's courthouse, and a suspect was killed after a probation officer returned fire, officials said.Jefferson County Judge Joseph Bruzzese Jr. was shot near the courthouse in Steubenville, just across the Ohio River from West Virginia's northern panhandle, roughly 30 miles (48 kilometers) west of Pittsburgh.Steubenville City Manager James Mavromatis tells WTOV-TV that Bruzzese was talking after being wounded. He was flown to a Pittsburgh-area hospital.Investigators didn't immediately release further information about the judge's condition or the suspect.
