  • Wells Fargo forced unwanted auto insurance on borrowers

    More than 800,000 people who took out car loans from Wells Fargo were charged for auto insurance they did not need, and some of them are still paying for it, according to an internal report prepared for the bank’s executives. The expense of the unneeded insurance, which covered collision damage, pushed roughly 274,000 customers into delinquency and resulted in almost 25,000 wrongful repossessions, according to the 60-page report, which was obtained by the New York Times. Among the Wells Fargo customers hurt by the practice were service members on active duty.

  • Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid arrives for 2017

    Toyota completely redesigned the regular Prius hybrid model for 2016, bringing the fourth generation of the trendsetting gasoline-electric vehicle.For this report, we tested the Advanced model, which came fully equipped except for two port-added items - paint protection film for an extra $395 and carpeted floor mats and a cargo mat for $224, bringing the total sticker price, including freight, to $34,604.Exclusive tech features different from the regular Prius include the available vertically oriented 11.6-inch multimedia touch screen and color head-up display.Safety features include Toyota Safety Sense, which consists of a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection and automatic braking; lane departure alert with steering assist; full-speed dynamic radar cruise control with full-stop technology and automatic high beams.The Prime also has an exclusive "dual wave" rear window, as well as a full-width LED rear combination light panel following the contour of the spoiler and the double-wave window.The Prime is available in four regular exterior colors - Classic Silver Metallic, Magnetic Gray Metallic, Titanium Glow and Blue Magnetism (available only on Prius Prime); and two premium colors, Blizzard Pearl and Hypersonic Red.EV Auto Mode automatically chooses all-electric driving as much as possible, while the Hybrid mode turns the car into virtually the same configuration as the regular Prius, running primarily on the gasoline engine with boost from the electric motor.The standard Prius hybrid and the Prius Prime come with the same Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain, using a 1.8-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder gasoline engine combined with an electric motor, connected to a continuously variable transmission.Besides the Prime and the regular Prius Liftback, Toyota offers a smaller hatchback version called the Prius C, whose prices for 2017 range from $20,150-$24,965; and the larger Prius V hatchback crossover, whose 2017 prices go from $26,675-$30,935.Midsize, five-door, five-passenger, four-cylinder, front-wheel drive, gasoline-electric/battery powered, plug-in hybrid hatchbackENGINES: 1.8-liter inline Atkinson cycle four-cylinder gasoline engine combined with an electric motor

    Volkswagen's midsize sedan not only offers European-style and handling, a willing turbocharged engine and plenty of room for under $24,000 but blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning (with automatic emergency braking) are baked in.Ditto its six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and sport mode, rear camera system with independent brightness control and VW Car-Net, VW's telematics and smartphone integration bundle.Just one step up from the base Passat, the R-Line is VW's designated sport version with 235/40 19-inch all-season tires on double-spoke alloy wheels.Unfortunately, there's no manual gearbox but the R-Line does get its own bumpers, grille, brushed stainless steel covers for the gas and brake pedals, and R-Line scuff protectors for the doorsills.Volkswagen also packages the R-Line with standard automatic headlights, heated, foldable side mirrors, heated front seats (eight-way power with lumbar support for driver/manual passenger), dual-zone climate control, tilt telescoping steering column, leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel and shift lever handle, one-touch power windows, three 12-volt power points and USB and auxiliary inputs.In addition to the driver-assist technology, VW added high-strength steel to specific places, including foot wells and door sills to improve stiffness without adding weight.The 3,263-pound Passat was named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and has earned a five-star overall rating from the National Traffic Highway Safety Administration.Volkswagen notes that while both engines operate fine on regular unleaded gas, the published horsepower specs were attained on premium.VW's Car-Net and "App-Connect" technology is standard, so compatible mobile devices can take advantage of the Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink smartphone integration systems.
