  • Supreme Court declines to hear NM tree clearing dispute
    Monday Oct 2, 2017

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has left in place a lower court ruling that prevents New Mexico from greenlighting tree clearing on federal land in the state in the name of fire prevention. The Supreme Court declined Monday to hear a dispute between New Mexico and the federal government. The issue dates back to 2001 when New Mexico passed a law saying the U.S. Forest Service had failed to reduce the threat of forest fires by not clearing undergrowth and removing trees on Forest Service land. The law then gave counties in the state permission to do the work. When Otero County moved to cut trees on land in the Lincoln National Forest without federal approval in 2011, the United States government sued.

  • When Indigenous People Control Their Own Land, It Protects Us All From Carbon Emissions
By Ben Paynter - Tuesday Oct 3, 2017

A new center is using mapping and legal services to help establish that indigenous people are rightful owners of rainforests around the world, in turn protecting those forests so that they can keep sequestering greenhouse gases.

Tropical rainforests controlled by indigenous people currently store 25% of the world’s carbon emissions. At the same time, “controlled” is usually something of a misnomer. While indigenous communities claim ownership of up to 50% of the world’s land, they’ve only legally secured about 10% of it.  Many aren’t able to prove–with evidence accepted by courts–that the areas they’ve occupied for generations are technically theirs, giving industries the ability to work out claims or annexations of ancestral territories for mining, hydropower plants, or palm oil plantations, all of which destroy the land.

  • Unique Bella fades after a fast start in Filly & Mare Sprint horse race
By Larry Stumes - Saturday Nov 4, 2017

Heavy favorites disappointed in the Breeders’ Cup on Saturday at Del Mar, and Unique Bella couldn’t avoid that fate in the $1 million Filly & Mare Sprint. Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, the gray 3-year-old filly set fast fractions in the 7-furlong race (21.84 seconds for the first quarter-mile, 44.35 for the half) but faded in the stretch to finish seventh. Bar of Gold, a 66-1 shot, rallied from next-to-last place in the field of 14 to edge 18-1 Ami’s Mesa by a nose in 1:22.63. Unique Bella lost by 7 lengths and even finished 3¼ lengths behind fifth-place Princess Karen, whom she beat by 3½ lengths in the LA Woman Stakes on Oct. 8 at Santa Anita.

  • Jerry Hollendorfer has 2 contenders in Breeders’ Cup races
By Larry Stumes - Tuesday Oct 31, 2017

With five straight dominant victories since a second in her debut, Unique Bella is the strong 9-5 morning-line favorite for the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint on Saturday at Del Mar. With his best race having come at Del Mar, Battle of Midway is a dangerous 10-1 shot in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile on Friday. “When you’re going into these kinds of races, you have to understand that these are the top horses in the world, so it’s a little tougher than the average race,” trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said. “We’re optimistic we can do a good job.” Despite the 3-year-old filly’s gaudy record, Unique Bella faces some obstacles in the 7-furlong Filly & Mare Sprint.
