- Memorial service set for Pi Day creator Larry Shaw
By Steve Rubenstein - Monday Sep 18, 2017
Three-point-one-four was more than a number to museum curator Larry Shaw, who created the offbeat, lighthearted and pizza-infused mathematical holiday known as Pi Day. It was Mr. Shaw, a man who loved numbers even more than he loved a slice of pizza, who transformed the endless number into an endless celebration of mathematics, joy and pepperoni. Mr. Shaw, who died Aug. 19 at age 78 from complications of Alzheimer’s Disease in a Petaluma assisted living residence, was the technical curator at the Exploratorium science museum in San Francisco. In 1988, during a staff retreat, he came up with the idea to link the digits of pi, which begins 3.14, with the date March 14.

By JOCELYN NOVECK, AP National Writer - Tuesday Sep 5, 2017
NEW YORK (AP) — Twice a year, Fashion Week crowds in New York cram into the lobby of a Chelsea gallery, waiting patiently to descend a staircase and see what bizarre, fantastical, endlessly inventive universe Thom Browne has created for his womenswear show — an otherworldly experience akin to getting lost on the set of a Tim Burton film.Browne has led his guests into a dark and eerie cathedral, with real pews and crosses, candles and incense. He's brought them to a wood-paneled operating room in an 18th-century hospital. He's created a dreamy winterscape in an urban park in shade of gray, and an eye-popping, multi-hued swimming pool with bathing beauties from another dimension.
