  • ‘Game of Thrones': Where the Hell Is Ghost, Jon Snow’s Direwolf?
    By Phil Hornshaw, provided by
    - Sunday Aug 20, 2017

(Some light spoilers for the August 20 episode of “Game of Thrones.”)It was an eventful week for Jon Snow, heading north of the wall with his elite squad to try to kidnap an undead wight.Well, not as elite a squad as it could have been, given that Jon’s direwolf Ghost was noticeably absent from this adventure. In fact, we haven’t seen him in season 7 at all! Ghost has seemingly gone AWOL.He’s always been something of a free spirit on “Game of Thrones.” When he went north of the Wall with the Night’s Watch, Ghost spent a lot of the time hanging around by himself, hunting and wandering the north before occasionally heading back to Jon.

  • How ‘Only the Brave’ Went From Magazine Pages to the Multiplex
    By Matt Donnelly, provided by

Twenty stand-up, small town guys. An elite squad of first responders in the Arizona mountains. Everyday heroes whose loved ones suffered the “greatest loss of firefighters since 9/11.”Any studio head would likely break a finger motioning to greenlight that concept if it came through on spec, but that’s not how it was born. The story of Josh Brolin and Miles Teller’s “Only The Brave,” out Friday from Sony Pictures, happened in real life and was adapted from a widely-read 2013 GQ magazine story.

  • High school top 25: Tough club to join
By Mitch Stephens - Monday Oct 23, 2017

Most teams were rusty after being off a week due to poor air quality caused by the Wine Country fires. Despite that, the top 15 teams were perfect and didn’t move in this week’s Chronicle football rankings. The region’s elite went 20-5 last week, however four of those defeats were to other ranked squads — Antioch to Liberty-Brentwood, Mitty to St. Francis, Menlo-Atherton to Half Moon Bay and Acalanes-Lafayette to Clayton Valley-Concord. Previous No. 25 Fremont-Oakland fell out of the rankings following a 28-20 loss to Oakland Tech.
