After Saturday morning’s practice, Cal head coach Justin Wilcox asked his players to reflect on how their bodies felt when the session started two hours earlier. They got the point without him explaining that the 9:30 a.m. practice was scheduled to match the 12:30 p.m. (Eastern) kickoff time facing the Bears in their season-opener next Saturday at North Carolina. “That won’t be in issue for us,” Wilcox said. “… I know we want to make this a bigger deal, but it’s not.” This year’s opener will mark the Bears’ first game in the Eastern time zone since a 35-28 loss to Ohio State in 2012. They haven’t won a game in the Eastern time zone since 2002, when they beat Michigan State 46-22.
