Residents of Alameda Point were warned Tuesday not to drink, wash dishes, cook or brush their teeth using tap water after contaminants were found in the water supply. The City of Alameda issued a 48-hour water quality alert in the area that encompasses the former Alameda Naval Air Station after testing by the East Bay Municipal Utility District confirmed that the tap water was not fit to drink. The restrictions apply only to Alameda Point, where the water supply system relies on old Navy infrastructure and pipelines, according to an Alameda Police Department advisory. Crews began flushing the system Tuesday in an attempt to restore water quality to the distribution system.

Residents and visitors to Alameda Point can again safely drink and use the tap water, officials announced Friday night. A news release from the Alameda Police Department said the State Water Resources Control Board, Division of Drinking Water had lifted its do-not-drink order, imposed Tuesday after tests by the East Bay Municipal Utility District showed it unfit for drinking or human contact. Officials advise running all faucets for 10 minutes to flush out contaminants before using water for drinking, washing, cooking or brushing teeth. Results from two rounds of tests showed no contaminants present in the tap water, according to the release.
