  • Ferdie Pacheco, ‘fight doctor’ for Muhammad Ali, Dies at 89
By Chronicle news services - Friday Nov 17, 2017

Ferdie Pacheco, “the fight doctor,” a boxing presence for four decades as the physician in Muhammad Ali’s corner and later a ringside television analyst, died Thursday at his home in Miami. He was 89. His death was confirmed by his wife, Luisita Pacheco. In the early 1960s, Mr. Pacheco’s love of boxing drew him to the gritty 5th St. Gym in Miami Beach, where Ali, then known as Cassius Clay, was among the young fighters honing their skills under renowned trainer Angelo Dundee. Mr. Pacheco joined with Dundee when Ali rose in the pro ranks and remained with Ali during most of his reign as the charismatic heavyweight champion.

Warner Bros./New Line’s “It” will continue its white-hot streak with an estimated $58 million from its second weekend in theaters. That total, which is a 52 percent drop-off from its horror record $123 million opening, will push the film’s domestic total past $200 million on the year, making it the 15th R-rated film in movie history to cross that mark and is expected to become the fourth R film to gross over $300 million. It also means that “It” is now the highest grossing September release ever, breaking a 33-year record held by “Crocodile Dundee,” which made $174.8 million in 1984.

    - Tuesday Oct 3, 2017

Lance Russell, longtime professional wrestling commentator, died on Tuesday at age 91. His passing was announced on Twitter by WWE legend Jerry Lawler, whose matches Russell called on “Championship Wrestling” in Memphis.Though he was a broadcaster, Russell became as much of a star among Memphis wrestling fans as the wrestlers themselves thanks to his interviews with stars like Lawler, Bill Dundee, and Jimmy Hart. Russell called out heels with a disgusted tone when they attempted to cheat in a match, but doing so with acidic wit rather than yelling. This led to confrontations between him and the show’s villains, who often called him “Banana Nose” after Lawler popularized the term during one of his heel runs.
