English professor Vivian (Helen Shaver), while waiting for her divorce to finalize in 1959 Reno, falls in love with casino worker and sculptor Cay (Patricia Charbonneau). Vivian is afraid the town will discover and judge her burgeoning orientation. Cay (10 years her junior) cares less; she teaches Vivian to focus on their emotions, not how others react. Based on Jane Rule’s 1964 novel “Desert of the Heart,” the film looks with its leads, feels how they feel, to arrive at a tender optimism and hope.
