  • Sick puppies spur New York scrutiny of non-profit rescues
By MARY ESCH, Associated Press - Sunday Aug 27, 2017

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — When Alexis Kozmon and her husband decided to get a dog for their 6-year-old daughter, they chose to adopt rather than buy from a breeder to teach the child the value of rescuing.Four weeks later, the puppy the family named Sugar was dying painfully from distemper, and despite $3,000 in veterinary treatments, the only humane option was to put her down. Two of Sugar's siblings met the same fate. Kozmon faulted the volunteer-based rescue that had trucked the puppies from Texas, but when she complained to New York's consumer protection agency, she learned such groups are exempt from oversight."There was a loophole," said Kozmon, who lives in Middletown, Connecticut, but adopted from a group in southeastern New York.

  • NY agency called Justice Center may lack power to prosecute
By DAVID KLEPPER, Associated Press - Wednesday Sep 20, 2017

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A New York state agency launched four years ago to protect the disabled from abuse and neglect was staffed with a team of investigators and prosecutors empowered to bring criminal cases against alleged wrongdoers. But it lacked one key thing, according to three recent court rulings: the legal authority to actually prosecute anyone. That has potentially put dozens of convictions in jeopardy and threatens to undermine the mission of the agency, known as the Justice Center, to protect the 1 million disabled, addicted and mentally ill in state care.

  • NEW! Campaign Touts Benefits Of Local Pet Adoptions
    Thursday Jun 22, 2017

New Jersey's Liberty Humane Society is launching its largest campaign thanks to The S3 Agency's pro bono program that awards free creative services to selected clients.

The Adopt A City Petcampaign combines  “shop local” with “adopt local” to convey the benefits of adopting a city pet. Images of pets are presented alongside headlines such as “Wedouble-dog dare you” and “Don’t be a scaredy-cat" to serve as a call-to-action. The goal is to get people to understand the impact of adopting local — and adopting throughLiberty Humane Society, who takes in city pets that need loving homes just as much as the fluffballs in the pet store, says The S3 Agency.

The challenge is that there is a lot of competitionwhen it comes to the animal adoption market; how do you motivate potential pet owners to see the needs that are most beneficial to their community?.

The ads run exclusively on out-of-homemedia along various NJ TRANSIT bus, rail, and light rail lines to reach commuters and residents throughout the summer. The message is supported across social media via the #AdoptACityPet hashtag.
