  • Raiders’ Jack Del Rio explains decision to fire defensive coordinator Ken Norton Jr.
By Matt Kawahara - Wednesday Nov 22, 2017

Head coach Jack Del Rio said on Wednesday that his decision to fire defensive coordinator Ken Norton Jr., 10 games into the season stemmed from watching a Raiders defense that “couldn’t continue doing what we’ve been doing to this point.” “What I’m looking for at the end of the day for us is to play fast on defense,” Del Rio said. “And we weren’t playing fast enough, weren’t playing confident enough. So that decision was made.” Norton was fired Tuesday amid his third season as the Raiders’ defensive coordinator. Oakland ranks 26th in the NFL in yards allowed this season and is last or tied for last in opponents’ passer rating, sacks and interceptions.

  • Alumni pump up Raiders on Day 1
By Vic Tafur - Sunday Jul 30, 2017

Marshawn Lynch walked over during practice to say hi to his Beast Mode production crew, as fans chanted the Raiders running back’s moniker. Derek Carr zipped passes to Amari Cooper, the Napa sun was shining and not even his left tackle’s holdout could spoil coach Jack Del Rio’s mood. “Day 1 of training camp always fires you up,” Del Rio said Especially when over 100 former players are on hand for alumni weekend. That they’re giddy about this team’s chances to go far in the playoffs means more to Del Rio, Carr and Khalil Mack than what the national experts or fans think. “Whenever you get the legends here, there is nothing like it,” Carr said.

  • Raiders’ Jack Del Rio hosts bocce tournament benefiting Bay Area causes
By Matt Kawahara - Tuesday Nov 7, 2017

Jack Del Rio faced a difficult early matchup in his foundation’s inaugural bocce-ball tournament Tuesday. It was Del Rio’s team of Raiders coaches against the squad from Hayward High, where Del Rio played three sports. “Yeah, that was tough,” Del Rio said. “I mean, we got beat by Hayward.” Del Rio’s team bowed out early. But his event, held at Campo di Bocce, was a win, attracting 32 teams and raising funds for several East Bay causes, including the athletic programs of Hayward, Mount Eden and Tennyson high schools, NorCal Special Olympics and the Alameda County Deputy Sheriff’s Athletic League. The Raiders’ bye week allowed Del Rio to host the tournament during the season.
