The district, known as SoMa Pilipinas, aims to preserve the city’s Filipino community while also expanding it with efforts such as Undiscovered SF, a night market intended to foster a new commercial corridor in the neighborhood.Starting Friday, Aug. 18, the Old Mint Building will host the large-scale creative night market every third Friday of the month, featuring Filipino cuisine and live performances, as well as clothing and crafts by Fil-Am vendors.The night market will double as an incubator for many of these budding small businesses, providing professional help to promote sustainable, long-term growth in the district.For this inaugural night market, Bay Area rapper Lyrics Born, above, is slated to perform a headlining set at 9 p.m., joined on the lineup by El Cerrito hip-hop and soul singer Joyo Velarde, and various local DJs and dancers.

Larry Page’s “city of the future” has found its first home in Toronto. Sidewalk Labs LLC, the urban innovation unit of Page’s Alphabet Inc., and Waterfront Toronto plan to foster the development of a high-tech community from scratch along Lake Ontario in Canada’s biggest city.
