“Mary Poppins” flies back to the Castro Theatre for multiple screenings Thursday-Sunday, Aug. 3-6, which means fans can sing along to the immortal Sherman Brothers tunes “A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Feed the Birds,” “Chim-Chim-Cher-ee,” and more with fellow Poppins fans. The 1964 musical masterpiece was the pinnacle of Walt Disney’s brand of sentimental sweetness.Disney too often let gratuitous sentiment get in the way of his technical innovation, his biggest skill. The mix of live action and animation still amazes today, and the emotions are perfectly handled.
