    A 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck near San Jose Monday afternoon, officials said. The earthquake, which was reported at around 5:53 p.m. hit more than 10 miles east of San Jose, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. No damage was immediately reported. The Spartans have lost four in a row by a combined score of 212-39.

The Spartans lost their two games against Power 5 schools — Texas and Utah — by a combined 110-16. San Jose State is 0-4 in MWC openers.

  • Two dead in San Jose fire

    Two people died in a three-alarm fire in San Jose early Saturday, officials said. Firefighters got to the scene of blaze at a two-story apartment building on the 500 block of South 9th Street in downtown San Jose just before 5 a.m., said Captain Mike Van Elgort, a spokesman for the fire department. Crews battled the fire on the second floor of the building and rescued four people, including two children. Two individuals were confirmed dead at the scene. They were not immediately identified. Two others were transported to a hospital with critical injuries. Firefighters knocked down the fire by 5:30 a.m., according to Van Elgort.

It’s a matchup of men who have endured tough first seasons as head coaches. San Jose State’s Brent Brennan’s lone victory was a 34-13 decision over Cal Poly on Sept. 2. Nevada’s Jay Norvell got his Oct. 7, 35-21 over Hawaii. Norvell spent two seasons (2002-03) coaching tight ends for the Raiders.
