  • Watch as 200-year-old painting gets restored to its original glory
By Brian Koerber - Tuesday Nov 7, 2017

While some old paintings may have a yellow or brownish hue to them, underneath the protective varnish may be a perfect painting, filled with lush colors and depth.

Art dealer and TV personality Philip Mould shared a series of videos to Twitter on Monday, which show the removal of varnish from an oil painting from the Jacobean (1603-1625) era.

"A remarkable Jacobean re-emergence after 200 years of yellowing varnish," he wrote.  Read more...

  • How clean energy is transforming the world, in 5 charts
By Maria Gallucci - Wednesday Jun 14, 2017

Take it straight from a major fossil fuel supplier: The world's energy mix is changing, and it's shifting toward lower-carbon fuels.

BP, the British oil and gas giant, said global efforts to slash greenhouse gas emissions and boost efficiency are having a tangible effect on global energy markets, with two main narratives playing out: the decline of coal, and the rapid rise of wind and solar power.

This week, BP released its Statistical Review of World Energy on 2016 data. For 66 years, this annual report has served as an energy industry statistical bible of sorts, painting the broad picture of global energy development.  Read more...

  • Leonardo da Vinci painting sells for eye-watering $450 million
By Johnny Lieu - Thursday Nov 16, 2017

It'll surely be a while before you see this much money being thrown around again.

Leonardo da Vinci's 500-year-old painting "Salvator Mundi" has broken the record for the most expensive artwork ever sold at auction, selling for an eye-watering $450,312,500, including buyer fees.

The sale decisively eclipsed the previous record held by Picasso's "Les Femmes d'Alger (Version 'O')" — which sold for $179 million in 2015.

A crowd packed into the Christie's saleroom in New York City gasped as the price jumped from $332 million to $350 million in one bid. Then again from $370 million to its final cost of $400 million, in a bidding war lasting just under 20 minutes. Read more...

  • If you hate cleaning the toilet, you should probably back this Kickstarter project
By Leah Stodart - Monday Nov 13, 2017

"Man, I can't wait to scrub the toilet when I get home," said no one ever.

Let's face it: cleaning the toilet is a necessary chore, but the list of things we'd rather do is infinitely long. We know it's gross to not clean it, but is it really worth it to put your hands in there?

If you've ever wished that a robot would just do this chore for you, you're in luck — an automatic toilet cleaning robot is now available on Kickstarter. We love the future.
