Retired NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton said Sunday there’s “no quick fix” for Chicago’s horrific murder rate and handed out blame to just about everyone involved in policing the Windy City. “Chicago has a number of special sets of circumstances,” Bratton told interviewer John Catsimatidis, on “The Cats Roundtable” radio show on AM 970. “It is...

- Windsor council blocks veterinarian from serving wine
By Alison Graham - Thursday Aug 24, 2017
The Windsor Town Council denied the request by Wine Country Veterinary Hospital to serve wine to its clients, a decision that was met with mixed feelings and emotions from town residents. The request was denied in a 3-2 vote at the town council meeting Aug. 16 after about 35 minutes of public comment and council discussion. Jessica Klein, the practice’s owner, started serving wine to her clients about five months ago before she was asked to stop after someone filed a complaint. When she applied for an alcohol license, the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control told her she must first receive approval from the town council.

- Overwatch’s Deathmatch mode is a great way to practice
By Mike Minotti - Tuesday Aug 29, 2017
“Git gud.” This is often the snarky reply to any Overwatch player who asks another how to get better at Blizzard‘s team-based shooter. But how, exactly, does one get good? Criterion’s Matt Webster and John Stanley confirmed as much in a recent interview with Metro. When asked if there would be […]
- Sick puppies spur New York scrutiny of non-profit rescues
By MARY ESCH, Associated Press - Sunday Aug 27, 2017
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — When Alexis Kozmon and her husband decided to get a dog for their 6-year-old daughter, they chose to adopt rather than buy from a breeder to teach the child the value of rescuing.Four weeks later, the puppy the family named Sugar was dying painfully from distemper, and despite $3,000 in veterinary treatments, the only humane option was to put her down. Two of Sugar's siblings met the same fate. Kozmon faulted the volunteer-based rescue that had trucked the puppies from Texas, but when she complained to New York's consumer protection agency, she learned such groups are exempt from oversight."There was a loophole," said Kozmon, who lives in Middletown, Connecticut, but adopted from a group in southeastern New York.
