  • Flooding disrupts care at Houston hospital, cancer center
By MARILYNN MARCHIONE and EMILY SCHMALL, Associated Press - Monday Aug 28, 2017

Officials began to evacuate one of the nation's busiest trauma centers Monday as flooding from Harvey threatened the hospital's supply of medicine and food.A spokesman at Houston's Office of Emergency Management said that all 350 patients at Ben Taub Hospital would be moved, hopefully within a day. Floodwater and sewage got into the basement of the hospital's main building and affected pharmacy, food service and other key operations."Our kitchen is shut down so we're relying on dry foods" said Bryan McLeod, a spokesman for the hospital's parent company, Harris Health System.Fresh linens and food deliveries were expected to arrive Monday, he said, adding that the hospital had been short-staffed and running out of supplies since Friday.

  • NY agency called Justice Center may lack power to prosecute
By DAVID KLEPPER, Associated Press - Wednesday Sep 20, 2017

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A New York state agency launched four years ago to protect the disabled from abuse and neglect was staffed with a team of investigators and prosecutors empowered to bring criminal cases against alleged wrongdoers. But it lacked one key thing, according to three recent court rulings: the legal authority to actually prosecute anyone. That has potentially put dozens of convictions in jeopardy and threatens to undermine the mission of the agency, known as the Justice Center, to protect the 1 million disabled, addicted and mentally ill in state care.

  • Thousands pack Golden Gate Park for AIDS Walk SF
By Filipa Ioannou - Monday Jul 17, 2017

More than 10,000 people turned out at Sharon Meadow in Golden Gate Park on Sunday for the annual AIDS Walk San Francisco, where organizers implored the crowd to fight for health care for all Americans, not just those living with HIV and AIDS.Some walkers filled in the blank with medical issues such as “degenerative disk disease” and “sickle cell anemia.”Craig Miller, the founder of the event, told the crowd that considering the looming possibility of rollbacks in the Affordable Care Act that took effect under former President Barack Obama, health care for all Americans, not just those living with HIV/AIDS, was a goal of the day.“We have a nice opportunity to send a message to Washington, D.C., that that is unacceptable,” Dana Van Gorder, executive director of Project Inform, said of efforts to repeal and replace the health care law with one critics say will hurt low-income people and others.Since its inception in 1987, the AIDS Walk has raised more than $88 million for Bay Area HIV programs and services.Three of the main beneficiaries this year were Project Open Hand, which provides meals to people in San Francisco and Alameda counties battling serious illness; Positive Resource Center, which offers comprehensive benefits counseling and employment services to people living with HIV/AIDS; and the Golden Compass Program at Ward 86, which focuses on the needs of HIV patients older than 50.Project Open Hand CEO Mark Ryle told the crowd that the current political climate reminded him of living under the presidency of Ronald Reagan, who did not acknowledge the AIDS crisis until it had raged for several years.McClelland said that years ago, as a member of a support group for people with a T-cell count under 50 — a mark of advanced HIV — he never imagined he and others would still be surviving with the infection, and even improving.
